A well-respected guitarist in Chicago's jazz community, Scott Hesse is known for his harmonic and rhythmic inventiveness and is at home in straight-ahead and avant-garde settings. As a leader, Scott has recorded four CDs, and he appears on a host of others. His most recent recording, The Stillness of Motion, features bassist Clark Sommers and drummer Makaya McCraven. Downbeat Magazine raved, "Hesse is terrific: great ears and crazy chops. Comping, he's inventive, offering suggestive and unexpected colors, sometimes spidery, fingered chords; when he cuts loose, his lines can be thrilling.” He is on the faculty at DePaul and Eastern Illinois University.
Pianist Paul Johnston is at home in a wide variety of musical styles and has performed with leading artists across the country. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Paul earned degrees at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at Indiana University, and he is an alumnus of Ravinia's Steans Music Institute and the Henry Mancini Institute. Soloists, chamber groups, and jazz ensembles regularly perform his compositions and arrangements, and Alfred Music has published several collections of his solo jazz piano arrangements. He has enjoyed teaching courses in jazz studies at Eastern Illinois University since 2004.
